Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Clyst St Mary Primary School, our PE and Sport curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils thrive, belong and achieve. Rooted in our school values of Nurture and Grow, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and healthy living.

We intend for every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. Through a progressive and inclusive curriculum, pupils build fundamental movement skills, develop competence across a range of sports and understand the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise.

We place a strong emphasis on nurturing resilience, kindness and aspiration through sport. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves, show determination, work collaboratively and demonstrate respect and fairness in all activities. Our curriculum promotes a strong sense of belonging, ensuring all pupils feel included, valued and able to succeed regardless of ability.

Using high-quality planning and expert coaching, we provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum. We also aim to strengthen links with the wider community, offering opportunities for children to experience a range of sports beyond the school setting.

Our use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium supports:

  • Increased participation in regular physical activity

  • Raising the profile of PE across the school

  • Developing staff expertise and confidence

  • Broadening sporting experiences for all pupils

  • Increasing engagement in competitive sport

Implementation

PE is delivered through a structured, progressive curriculum that ensures all pupils have the opportunity to thrive, belong and achieve. Children receive a minimum of two hours of high-quality PE each week, covering a wide range of sports and physical activities.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, the focus is on developing fundamental movement skills such as balance, coordination and agility. In Key Stage 2, pupils apply these skills to specific sports, developing tactics, teamwork and performance.

Our approach includes:

  • High-quality, twice-weekly PE lessons using carefully planned and adapted resources to meet the needs of all learners

  • A broad curriculum including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming, outdoor and adventurous activities and health-related fitness

  • Clear progression across year groups, ensuring skills and knowledge are built over time

  • Opportunities for competitive sport through school partnerships, festivals and events such as School Games and Change4Life

  • Inclusive extracurricular clubs, including SEND-accessible opportunities, to promote participation and enjoyment

  • Swimming provision in Year 4, with additional catch-up support where needed

  • Enrichment through external coaches and community links

We explicitly teach and promote key personal qualities such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, honesty and respect. Links between PE and science are highlighted to deepen pupils’ understanding of the body, fitness and health.

Whole-school events such as Sports Day and charity challenges further promote participation, aspiration and a sense of belonging.

Impact

Through our PE and Sport curriculum, pupils leave Clyst St Mary Primary School as confident, active and motivated individuals who are well-equipped to lead healthy lifestyles.

Children will:

  • Demonstrate the ability to thrive, belong and achieve through active participation and positive attitudes towards physical activity

  • Develop resilience, determination and aspiration, striving to achieve their personal best

  • Show kindness, respect and fairness, understanding the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship

  • Acquire and apply a broad range of physical skills across different sports and activities

  • Understand the importance of physical activity for both physical health and mental wellbeing

  • Feel confident to participate in sport both in and beyond school

Pupils benefit from an inclusive curriculum that supports all learners, leading to increased participation and enjoyment. They develop strong communication and collaboration skills through team activities and build self-confidence through individual achievements.

By the end of Key Stage 2:

  • The vast majority of pupils can swim at least 25 metres and perform safe self-rescue

  • Pupils understand how to stay active and make informed choices about healthy living

  • Pupils demonstrate a lifelong appreciation for sport and physical activity

Assessment is ongoing and based on pupils’ individual starting points, ensuring all children make progress and are supported to nurture and grow. As a result, pupils are physically literate, emotionally resilient and prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
